 Pohela Boishakh

Boisakh is the first month of bangla year. Pohela is a bangla word, meaning the first. So, Pohela Boisakh is the first day of the bangla year. It's a day celebrated by the Bangladeshies all over the world in a festive mood.

The  bangla year is a solar year based on the rotation  of sun. People welcome the first day of the new year at the moment of rising of the sun. They sing in chorus:

Esho hay boisakh esho esho. Welcome Boisakh. Heartiest welcome to you.

Fair on Boisakh is organized in almost every village and city. Handmade bags, ornaments and many items are sold there. The businessmen start the accounts of the New Year in a new book. The celebration of opening new account is called Halkhata.

The celebration of  pohela Boisakh started from the reign of King Akbar. Amir Fotehullah, one of the learned men  that time, proposed of this festival in order to receive taxes as well as to memorise the Emperorship of King Akbar.
